Taxis

Taxis

Taxis was born in Szczecin, Poland in May 1983 to a Polish art/cultural historian mother and a Greek etcher/painter father. His family moved to Athens, Greece at the age of 3. Growing up in an artistic family, he was introduced to the world of art from a very young age, which developed Dimitris’ an urge to find a way to express himself. At the age of 14, during a family vacation in Poland, he became familiar with the art of graffiti, giving him the excitement needed in order to try it.

He is involved with graffiti since 1997, which includes walls, bombs, trains etc. He also entered into comics in 2003. His short stories have been published in the Greek comic magazine “BABEL” since 2005 and has been awarded several times in comic competitions. He has collaborated with newspapers, magazines and books as an illustrator.

Taxis’ point of reference is the human himself. He is intrigued by the everyday inner struggle that society forces each individual to go through. In his art he aims to capture the feelings of desolation and hardship, feelings that have always tormented humanity. He believes that his work states obvious matters that many people tend to forget or ignore which in fact is something that should be strongly reexamined. There is no specific plan as well as technique since they evolve everyday. Thoughts, sketches and style change day after day according to the impulses he gets. He objects to stability so he always tests out every thought that he finds absorbing. He uses a wide variety of materials and techniques both to challenge himself and to discover new potentials.
He studied painting in the School of Fine Arts of Athens and graduated with first-class degree in 2008.

He has participated in several group shows and festivals in Greece, and around the world, deputing with his first solo show at Galo Art Gallery in Turin.

Currently he paints murals but also focuses on his work on canvas and paper at his studio in Athens, where he lives.

Mariana Duarte Santos

Mariana Duarte Santos

Her work is figurative. The themes in which she works are mainly focused on the concepts of memory, collective identity and local histories, which is why archival images are key in her work.

For the Oviedo mural we wanted to portray the countrywomen who go down to Fontán twice a week to sell the vegetables, legumes, and fruits that they grow in their gardens and farms. It´s a tradition that goes back centuries, and which maintains the most direct and personal trade possible.

For her work, Mariana started from a 1968 photograph by Francisco Ruiz Tilve from the photographic archive of the Museo del Pueblo de Asturias and she was able to meet the photographer’s family. The Portuguese artist also visited the street market with Ula Halszka and Celia Viada, who are making a documentary project entitled “Gregoria”, which covers the daily life of one of the Fontán women.

A granddaughter of the vendor who appears on the mural recognized her, first in a Facebook group, and later, when passing by on the street where the work is located, and she contacted Parees.

The woman in the mural is María Jovellanos García, now deceased. Originally from the region of Aller, she settled in Oviedo when she was young and after the Civil War she began to sell in the Plaza de El Fontán, where she worked for more than forty years taking the same place in the Plaza every day. One of those days, Francisco Ruiz Tilve took the photograph, which 54 years later served as the inspiration for Mariana Duarte in her tribute to the market sellers.

Nieve Sita

Nieve Sita

A Porruana resident in Oviedo for some years, Nieves González, has a degree in Fine Arts. He currently combines teaching with artistic creation, mainly focused on illustration and painting.

Her work is inspired by the Asturian tradition and culture, especially in the area of Llanes, which is where she grew up and where she feels most connected. All this tradition is intermingled many times with current issues, always relating the past with modernity with a carefree plastic language that draws from folklore, punk, kitsch and the world of tattooing.
