We don&#8217;t decorate. We research, we listen, we paint.<\/p>\n<h2>Why a mural and not something else?<\/h2>\n<p>Walls have spent millennia holding what a society doesn&#8217;t want to forget. First in caves, then in churches, then on the facades of neighbourhoods that were fighting to exist. Painting a wall has always been a political act, even when it doesn&#8217;t look like one.<\/p>\n<p>At Parees we start from that conviction: a mural intervention is not an ornament. It&#8217;s a decision about which stories deserve to occupy public space and which ones risk disappearing. That&#8217;s why every edition begins before the first brushstroke, when there&#8217;s still no sketch, when we&#8217;re still in the square listening.<\/p>\n<h2>Contextual muralism and situated muralism: not the same thing<\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s a difference worth naming.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>contextual<\/strong> mural dialogues with the physical environment: it respects the scale of the building, converses with the neighbourhood&#8217;s colours, fits the landscape. It&#8217;s good practice and the necessary starting point. Parees always works from there.<br \/>\nBut <strong>situated<\/strong> muralism goes further. The territory is not just the backdrop: it&#8217;s the source of the content. The subject isn&#8217;t brought in ready-made, it&#8217;s excavated. It emerges from the oral memory of the place, from its tensions, from what the people living beneath that wall have been feeling for years without anyone having painted it yet.<\/p>\n<p>The practical difference is this: a contextual mural could be made in another city with minor adjustments. A situated mural can only exist there, on that wall, in that neighbourhood, with that history.<\/p>\n<p>Parees pursues that second model. We don&#8217;t always get all the way there, but it&#8217;s the direction that shapes the work.<\/p>\n<h2>How an intervention is prepared<\/h2>\n<p>The process starts with finding the wall: drifting through the city, conversations with residents&#8217; associations, analysis of the facade&#8217;s physical condition and what happens around it. A wall isn&#8217;t chosen just for its size or visibility. It&#8217;s chosen because it has something to say.<\/p>\n<p>Then comes the research: physical, historical and social layers. What memories inhabit that place. What tensions run through it. Who uses it and how. That research becomes a field dossier that the artist receives before arriving, so their first visit to the neighbourhood isn&#8217;t that of a stranger.<\/p>\n<p>The choice of artists follows the same logic: we&#8217;re not looking for the most visible name, we&#8217;re looking for the fit. Which artist, at their current creative moment, can make that subject breathe. When that fit works, a preliminary sketch becomes unnecessary: trust in the process is enough.<\/p>\n<h2>Quality over quantity<\/h2>\n<p>Parees is entirely funded by public money from the Oviedo City Council&#8217;s Municipal Culture Foundation. That defines our limits and our commitment.<\/p>\n<p>Every intervention includes prior diagnosis and repair of the wall: cracks, damp, primers, professional exterior paints. A situated mural is heritage from day one and has to be treated as such.<\/p>\n<p>The whole team \u2014 artists, mediation, production, communication \u2014 works under fair conditions: proper fees, meals, insurance and an approach that doesn&#8217;t normalise precariousness. Nobody works for free. That&#8217;s not generosity, it&#8217;s consistency with what we ask of the territory.<\/p>\n<h2>Routes and activities<\/h2>\n<p>After each edition, the murals don&#8217;t get left alone. We organise guided routes through the pieces, explaining processes, contexts and the stories each mural holds. Also muralism workshops for families and groups, and in several editions, cycling routes connecting the interventions across the city.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is the same as the mural&#8217;s: for those who live here to feel it as their own.<\/p>\n<h2>The wall is already inhabited. We just need to learn to read it.<\/h2>\n<p>Every wall Parees works on has been waiting for years. Not empty, but loaded: with trades fading out, with memories nobody has painted yet, with tensions the neighbourhood knows and maps don&#8217;t capture.<\/p>\n<p>Our work is not to fill it. It&#8217;s to listen first.<\/p>\n<p>Because a mural that hasn&#8217;t listened to the place where it&#8217;s going to live is just paint. And paint fades.<\/p>\n<p><!--[lead]<strong>Parees, the contextual mural festival in Oviedo<\/strong>, is a cultural, social, and artistic event that engages both citizens and artists to offer the city a fresh perspective through its walls. Oviedo comes alive with color.[\/lead]\n\n\n\n\n<h2>Why wall interventions in Parees?<\/h2>\n\n\nWalls, or \"parees\" (in Asturian), have always told stories because there's an innate human need to express their existence on them. That's why we want to give the spotlight to walls transformed by artists. We're talking about muralism because it encompasses all the techniques, styles, and artistic expressions that walls can hold, always with a social commitment.\n\nWalls, or \"parees\" in Asturian, are like the blank canvases of the street, with a history that's woven over time. They've always been silent witnesses to people's lives, struggles, laughter, and tears, as humanity has a deep need to leave its mark on them. That's why we immerse ourselves in the world of mural intervention.\n\nFor us, muralism is more than just conventional art. It brings together various techniques, styles, and artistic expressions, finding their canvas on the walls of our cities. But muralism isn't just about aesthetics; it's a deep social commitment. Every stroke, every color, every image tells a story, conveys an idea, or evokes an emotion.\n\nAt Parees, we celebrate the union of creativity and social consciousness. We believe that murals are more than mere urban adornments; they are open windows for reflection, protest, hope, and inspiration. Each mural is a bold statement, a visual conversation that challenges established norms and stimulates the imagination of those who view it.\n\nWalls are living canvases that deserve to be filled with stories, art, and a commitment to the world around us.\n\n\n\n<h2>Participatory processes<\/h2>\n\n\nIn the realm of participatory processes, the connection between different stakeholders and the involvement of artistic mediators (the Raposu Roxu team (<a href=\"http:\/\/raposuroxu.org\">Raposu Roxu<\/a>)) play a crucial role. These participatory processes involve key actors such as associations and community residents who work closely with artists to create works that reflect social needs and the unique characteristics of the environment.\n\nThe collaboration between artists and residents enables the generation of consensus sketches. This ensures that murals or artistic projects are an authentic and meaningful representation of the community in which they are created.\n\nMuralism, as a form of collective artistic expression, becomes a tool to strengthen the sense of belonging within a community. Through these participatory processes, inclusive dialogue is encouraged, and local cultural identity is promoted.\n\nIt's important to highlight the social value these projects hold by giving a voice to different sectors of society and by creating more accessible and inclusive public spaces. This way, an understanding of social imagination and cultural details is achieved to be reflected in art.\n\nThese murals promote cultural identity and traditions of a society. Through art, conversations and reflections about important community topics are generated.\n\nIt's essential to recognize the value artists bring to the social fabric through contextualized murals. Their work not only transforms a space visually but also strengthens community bonds and fosters cultural pride.\n\nWith contextualized murals, we make sure to create interventions linked to the territory and its surrounding social imagery. This way, through visiting the interventions created in Parees, you can get an idea of where you are, cultural details, arts, society, and traditions.\n\n\n\n<h2>Quality versus quantity<\/h2>\n\n\nThe project is entirely funded by the Municipal Culture Foundation of the Oviedo City Council. For us, this represents a commitment to society. Therefore, we offer artists, producers, collaborators, and coordinators fair fees, sustenance, accident insurance, and a caring, family-like approach.\n\nAll interventions have a prior study of the wall that will host the artistic work, and they are prepared appropriately to ensure maximum durability. This involves the application of primers, in some cases, pressure washing, and repairs for flaking and cracks.\n\n\n\n\n<h2>Sustainable mobility<\/h2>\n\n\nIn each edition of Parees, we offer a bicycle route to visit the murals.\n\nSustainable mobility is of great importance today. More and more people are opting for environmentally responsible means of transportation, such as bicycles. A bike ride not only allows us to enjoy the outdoors and stay active but also contributes to reducing carbon emissions and promoting a sustainable city.\n\nIn addition to pedaling through the streets, another interesting way to explore a city from a sustainable perspective is by visiting murals and art installations that beautify its streets. These visits not only allow us to appreciate urban art but also raise awareness about the importance of caring for our environment and promoting responsible mobility.\n\nIn summary, sustainable mobility provides us with the opportunity to enjoy a unique experience while contributing to the care of the planet.
