They&#8217;ve read the territory. They&#8217;ve talked to people in the neighbourhood. They understand what memory lives in that wall and why it deserves to be told. That prior work is not a formality: it&#8217;s half the artwork.<br \/>\n<br \/>At Parees we call this mediation. And without it, the mural wouldn&#8217;t be situated. It would be decoration.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-6\">\n<h2>The role of mediation<\/h2>\n<p>Mediation is not translating what the community wants so the artist can execute it. It&#8217;s more complex and more interesting than that. The mediator operates between three languages that rarely understand each other on their own: that of the administration (deadlines, permits, budgets), that of the artist (aesthetics, process, vision) and that of the territory (memory, tensions, pride, forgetting).<\/p>\n<p>Without someone to translate between those three codes, conflict is inevitable. Mediation is the shield that protects the process and the filter that catches risks before they become problems.<\/p>\n<p>At Parees, this work is led by Laura Lara from Raposu Roxu, who accompanies each intervention from the initial research through to the finished piece.<\/p>\n<h2>Three ways of arriving at a mural<\/h2>\n<p>Not all Parees murals are born from the same process. Depending on the wall, the subject and the time available, mediation takes different forms. We&#8217;ve been refining them edition by edition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situated mural.<\/strong> The artist immerses directly in the territory. They visit the neighbourhood, talk to people, take part in listening dynamics with key figures from the area. The sketch emerges from those encounters, it doesn&#8217;t arrive from home. It&#8217;s the most demanding approach and the one that produces work with the deepest roots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contextualised mural.<\/strong> When budget or deadlines don&#8217;t allow for a full in-person immersion, mediation builds a prior bridge: a detailed field dossier on the chosen subject, virtual meetings with people from the territory, research materials the artist receives before arriving. The physical presence becomes shorter but more precise. It&#8217;s not the ideal model, but done with rigour it works.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community mural.<\/strong> The community doesn&#8217;t just inspire the work: it executes it. In workshop format, local residents paint alongside the artist. The result is a collectively authored piece that dismantles the classic role of the artist as an isolated figure. It tends to be the intervention that takes care of itself most afterwards.<\/p>\n<h2>What never changes<\/h2>\n<p>Whatever the format, one thing stays constant: the artist doesn&#8217;t arrive with the subject already decided. The subject is discovered through the process. If in the end the proposed theme doesn&#8217;t resonate with the territory, it stops. It doesn&#8217;t get forced. That capacity to say no, to pause before imposing, is part of the method and part of the ethics.<\/p>\n<p>Because a mural that hasn&#8217;t listened to the place where it&#8217;s going to live is just paint. This process enables the artist to be an agent of change, stimulates dialogue on critical issues and builds bridges of connection and understanding.[\/lead]\n\n[row]\n[column md=\"6\"]\n\n\n<h2>Why participatory processes?<\/h2>\n\n\n<em>Parees<\/em> presents models of functional and sustainable action to intervene on walls with what we call variously contextual art, artistic murals, collaborative art practices, new types of public art, or aesthetic dialogues, <strong>to positively influence coexistence in public space and boost the social and cultural life of our neighbourhoods.<\/strong>\n\nIn this type of artistic intervention, it is always important to highlight the value of the process, the collective work of inquiry and intervention in a neighbourhood, the active value of the communities, and, above all, the denial of the role of the artist as an isolated agent, and the work of art as a distant and incomprehensible object of social reality.\n\n\n<h2>For what participatory processes?<\/h2>\n\n\nAs indicated by Paul Ardenne <em>(\u201cUn art contextuel: cr\u00e9ation artistique en milieu urbain, en situation, d'intervention, de participation\u201d, Flammarion 2002)<\/em>, art must be contextualized within the framework of an action that generates a propositive change, wherever it occurs. A contextualization that achieves, through art, spaces for new social interactions where they did not exist before. Spaces converted into opportunities for expression, making the most of places that have mostly been ignored and forgotten. <strong>Thus, a new geography is created, a new social productivity of space, which redefines the role of that space and of the person, the neighbour, the citizen.<\/strong> In short, we take full advantage of a place, strengthening the intrinsic dimensions that it has and those that it has acquired through the artistic intervention.\n\n\n<h2>How do the participatory processes work?<\/h2>\n\n\n<strong>The artists are accompanied and guided by local mediators who facilitate the dynamics<\/strong> of meeting with people and significant entities of the municipality. Based on these encounters, the artist produces the design, working in situ, so that it is generated based on specific inputs for the project and thus flee from clich\u00e9s or pre-established ideas.\n\n\n<h2>Types of murals<\/h2>\n\n\nWe have cataloged the different types of murals into three categories: participatory, contextualized and community murals.\n\n<strong>Participatory murals<\/strong> are those in which the artist immerses him- or herself in some layer of social reality or of the locality guided by the mediators and through participatory dynamics with key agents. From this process a design emerges in situ. In this way a direct relationship is established with the place and its inhabitants.\n\n<strong>Contextualized murals<\/strong> refer to those created through a process occurring at a distance. Personalized dossiers are compiled for each artist which collect together information on the proposed theme and virtual meetings are organized with key agents. In this case an indirect relationship is established with the locality and its inhabitants.\n\nFinally, <strong>community murals<\/strong> are those in which citizens are an active part of the creation of the mural, helping the artist to paint it. They are usually completed in a workshop format, and for this reason they represent a very direct and active way of linking the artist, society and the locality. Of particular interest is the collective authorship of such work, challenging the classic role of the artist as protagonist.\n\nIn the 2017 festival, three murals were made with such participatory processes; those of <a href=\"http:\/\/paredesfest.net\/artistas\/agostino-iacurci\/\">Agostino Iacurci<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/paredesfest.net\/artistas\/ovni-vs-taratiel\/\">Anna Taratiel<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/paredesfest.net\/artistas\/bitxo\/\">Bitxo<\/a>.\n\nIn the 2018 edition, the murals of <a href=\"http:\/\/paredesfest.net\/artistas\/colectivo-licuado\/\">Colectivo Licuado<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/paredesfest.net\/artistas\/xav\/\">Xav<\/a> are participatory murals. Those of <a href=\"http:\/\/paredesfest.net\/artistas\/andrea-ravo-mattoni\/\">Andrea Ravo<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/paredesfest.net\/artistas\/alfalfa\/\">Alfalfa<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/paredesfest.net\/artistas\/kruella-d-enfer\/\">Kruella d'Enfer<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/paredesfest.net\/artistas\/taquen\/\">Taquen<\/a> are contextualized murals, and the community murals are those produced in the experimental workshops with graffiti and muralism for the elderly.\n\n\n<h2>Raposu Roxu<\/h2>\n\n\nThe participatory processes of the interventions are designed and put into practice by <a href=\"http:\/\/raposuroxu.org\">Raposu Roxu<\/a> (Laura Lara).\n\nThese processes <strong>invite us to break with linear thinking to let creative processes emerge<\/strong>.
