María Peña, known as Mapecoo, is an Asturian artist with an impressive international career, encompassing exhibitions and urban art projects focused on social challenges and personal narratives. With each project, she seeks to foster dialogue and promote social change through art.
Mapecoo’s mural reflects on the challenges faced by the apple with Asturian Denomination of Origin, from production to consumption. Through visual language, it explores the contrast between the past and the future of this emblematic crop.
On the left, the apples are clearly depicted, showcasing the various local Asturian varieties. On the right, however, the apples appear pixelated, symbolizing the gradual loss of local production and disconnection from natural processes. These pixels also reference the digital age, which distances us from nature and hints at an uncertain, challenge-laden future.
In the center, a young woman gazes toward the future, inspired by the testimony of a woman whose family has worked in apple cultivation for generations. Her tattoo of a graft represents efforts to preserve this tradition.
Flying above the scene, a great tit perches as a guardian of the apple trees, symbolizing the interconnection between nature and cultivation, a crucial ally in pest protection.
This mural invites reflection, addressing the challenges we must face to preserve our traditions and adapt to the future.
